What you'll need:
- Sola flowers
- Annie Sloan Chalk Paints
- Water
- Plastic cups
- Gloves
- Paper towels

Step 1: Mix your paint

Start by mixing your Annie Sloan Chalk Paint with water in a plastic cup. We recommend using- Paintbrushesa 1:1 ratio of paint to water, but you can adjust this depending on how intense you want the color to be. Stir the mixture well until it's smooth and even.

Pro Tip: Using vegetable glycerine can help to create a softer on your flowers. Just mix 1 part vegetable glycerine to 9 parts water/paint solution and dip your flowers in as usual. This can be especially useful if you want to create a pastel or watercolor effect on your flowers.

Step 2: Dye your flowers

Put on your gloves and start dipping your sola flowers into the paint mixture. Use a paintbrush to help spread the paint evenly over the petals. Make sure to cover all sides of the flower, including the center, for a uniform look. If you want a more ombre effect, you can dip the flowers partway into the paint and then gradually lift them out.

Pro tip: For a more subtle, speckled effect, you can use a small spray bottle to mist the paint mixture onto the flowers. Alternatively, you can use a fan brush to lightly deposit color onto specific areas of the flower, such as the tips of the petals or the center. This technique adds depth and dimension to your dyed sola flowers for an even more unique look. Experiment with different application methods to find the one that suits your style. You can also use a needle nose bottle to deposit color deep into the base of the flower.

Step 3: Let flowers dry

Once you've dyed your flowers, set them aside on a paper towel to dry. Depending on how much paint you used, this could take anywhere from a few hours to overnight. Make sure the flowers are completely dry before handling them again.

Pro Tip: we recommend using egg crates or wired cookie sheets to allow air flow around your flowers!

Step 4: Style your flowers

Once your flowers are dry, you can stem them through the base with an 18g wire. Start arranging them in a vase or creating a centerpiece with other greenery. Mix and match different colors and textures and sizes to create a unique look that complements your home decor.

Dyeing sola flowers with Annie Sloan Chalk Paints is a fun and easy way to customize your floral arrangements. At The Stilwell House, we love experimenting with different color combinations and techniques to create one-of-a-kind designs. Give it a try and see what beautiful creations you can come up with!

Pro tip: You can also mix different colors of Annie Sloan Chalk Paints to create custom shades for your sola flowers. This is a great way to match the flowers to your room's color scheme or to add a pop of color to a neutral space. Don't be afraid to experiment with different color combinations to find the perfect hue for your project.
